Safeguarding Policy​

Jersey Horse Of The Year Show (JHOYS) & Home Farm Equestrian (HFE) acknowledges the duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and is committed to ensuring safeguarding practice reflects statutory responsibilities, government guidance and complies with best practice. This policy outlines JHOYS & HFE’s approach to safeguarding young people (under 18s) online.

ABOUT US

We are Home Farm Equestrian. We are an equine club whose mission is “To build a supportive, fun, friendly equestrian community and to provide lots of various activities and demos to help us all improve our knowledge and achieve our goals.”

To achieve our mission, we support and deliver clinics and competitions (which we collectively refer to in this Policy as the “Services”) in Jersey.

THE PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THIS POLICY STATEMENT

The purpose of this policy statement is:

  • to protect children and young people who receive JHOYS & HFE’s services from harm. This includes the children of adults who use our services

  • to provide staff and volunteers, as well as children and young people and their families, with the overarching principles that guide our approach to child protection. This policy applies to anyone working on behalf of JHOYS & HFE’s including committee members, trainers, helpers and judges.

LEGAL FRAMEWORK

This policy has been drawn up on the basis of legislation, policy and guidance that seeks to protect children in England & The Channel Islands. 

WE RECOGNISE THAT

The welfare of children is paramount in all the work we do and in all the decisions we take all children, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation have an equal right to protection from all types of harm or abuse

  • Some children are additionally vulnerable because of the impact of previous experiences, their level of dependency, communication needs or other issues

  • Working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare.

WE WILL SEEK TO KEEP CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE SAFE BY:

  • valuing, listening to and respecting them

  • appointing a nominated child protection lead for children and young people, a deputy for safeguarding

  • adopting child protection and safeguarding best practices

  • providing effective management for volunteers through supervision, support, training so that all staff and volunteers have safeguarding at the forefront of their work.

  • recruiting and selecting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made

  • recording, storing and using information professionally and securely, in line with data protection legislation and guidance more information about this is available from the Information Commissioner’s Office: https://jerseyoic.org/

  • making sure that children, young people and their families know where to go for help if they have a concern

  • creating and maintaining an anti-bullying environment.

  • ensuring that we provide a safe physical environment for our children, young people and volunteers, by applying health and safety measures in accordance with the law and regulatory guidance

  • building a safeguarding culture where volunteers, children, young people and their families, treat each other with respect and are comfortable about sharing concerns

DATA SHARING 

All data will be stored and shared in accordance with our privacy policy. Users of our website, social media and services will have agreed to this.

WEBSITE SAFEGUARDING

  • Parental permission must be obtained prior to sharing any images, audio or videos of riders and this permission is granted when signing up to be a member.

  • Young riders, parents/guardians or must indicate that the rider is under 18 prior to taking part in an online competition.

  • All members have the option to mark their video as private and under these circumstances only the judge and secretary have access to the video and it cannot be used for promotional purposes.

  • Where junior member enters online we will email to only to the contact given on the membership form and not share their details to any other individuals.

PARENTAL CONSENT 

When a junior wishes to become a member or enter any of JHOYS & HFE’s clinics or competitions this may only be done so through a legal parent or guardian. 

Communication will only happen through the contact given on their membership forms.
